TOSCA NEWS - SUMMER/FALL 2007
Hi Everyone! Thanks for tuning in, and it's high time we let you know what we've been up to this last year!
ON STAGE
At the SXSW festival in March we had one very busy night! First we played several of our own tangos, then were joined by Lambchop's Kurt Wagner and guitarist William Tyler for a set of their tunes. Then we ran over to Emo's to play on Voxtrot's showcase, premiering tunes from their new album. Find out more about that in the "Studio" section.
In May we were the "house strings" for Freescale's Road to Austin concert at Auditorium Shores. We accompanied Malford Milligan, Bob Schneider, and Stephen Bruton, but the highlight was playing with Kris Kristofferson and Bonnie Raitt!
In June we traveled to New York City to join Voxtrot on their tour and played to a sold out Webster Hall! We played a solo show (our NYC quartet debut) at Joe's Pub, performing some of our tangos and sitting in with the fabulous Heather Greene, and also did a radio show with Heather on WFMU.
Back in Austin, we have a new Thursday night home with Glovertango! You can now find one or all of us most Thursdays at Lambert's down on 2nd and Guadalupe.
IN THE STUDIO
In January we braved the ice storm to record on Voxtrot's first full-length album. They even bought out every space heater in Austin so that the studio wouldn't feel like an icebox! The self-titled album was released in late May on the Beggar's Banquet/Playlouder imprint, we joined the band for their record release party, also a sold-out show at Emo's. For more info visit www.voxtrot.net.
Also in January, we recorded an original piece for ballet by Kip Winger (of heavy-metal band Winger fame), set for string quartet, upright bass, piano, and harp, as well as an upcoming release for fabulous blues-rock singer Carolyn Wonderland.
August found us at Ray Benson's studio recording for Paula Nelson's (Willie's daughter) new record. You can find more details at www.paulanelsonband.com.
This year, we also recorded for Spoon's new hit record, "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga" at the band's amazing new Austin studio, and we recorded with Grammy award winner Mark Cohn's upcoming "Join the Parade" release, produced by Austin's own Charlie Sexton.
OTHER NEWS
Sorry to break it to you, guys, but another one of the Tosca girls is about to be officially "off the market." Violist Ames Asbell will be married to Todd Alley on November 30th. Congratulations to the happy couple!
